Of course! I would love to show you around. Cloudy skies, 63 degrees F currently.

Ha. It's odd, I have a love/hate thing with tea, sometimes I hate it, sometimes I love it and need it. I had a massive craving for it all the time in the US. It's probably the caffeine :D But yeah, that is not how you make tea! *looks stern* You need a mug. Maybe with a picture of the Royal Family on. And a good brand (Bettys, Earl Grey). And crumpets. With butter. Please implement this ASAP.
How can a British person possibly hate tea? We'll see about getting me to drink it the proper way. First I have to find out where to get crumpets.

Zeek wrote:
Yeah? I was thinking of getting an e-book reader. Any suggestions? Which one do you use?
I use Google Books. I actually don't have a dedicated ebook reader: I use the Android app on my smartphone and the web interface on my laptop and desktop computers.

Honestly, though, I think Amazon and the Kindle works the best for most people.

I don't know, man. I have a tough time categorizing my life as "busy."

Also, I want to weep at the lack of bubble tea in the UK now :(
I went through the bubble tea phase. And the froyo phase. I'm not sure what the current food fad is now.

But if you really wanted, you could easily travel for free just because of your gender.

I'm sure you could...in very certain circumstances. I cannot see a man buying a girl a plane ticket to Poland or elsewhere if she asks him/flirts with him/etc. There would surely have to be some contextual motivation there - the only situations I can think of are a) they are a couple, and he gifts her the ticket, or they are family and he helps her out with the ticket b) he loans her money as a friend, c) she is a mistress or a high-end escort that he is paying to fly somewhere.

It's hardly a bus ticket...for something as big and as expensive as a plane ticket, either she would be very close to him, or there would be another motivation there and an expected payment for him as well. I just can't see a girl flirting with some guy in a bar or elsewhere and her wrangling a plane ticket out of the deal, in most situations (obviously, there are probably exceptions). I would compare it to an expensive piece of jewellery. A man may buy a woman an expensive piece of jewellery if a) they are married / a couple b) she is a sister / close family member c) he expects something out of the deal (e.g., it is for a mistress) or d) he is completely, completely infatuated with her. All of those situations happen - but not in everyday casual interactions between a man and a woman...

[Man: *drops some icecubes on the floor next to cute girl in a bar* "Well, now I've broken the ice...it's your turn!"
Girl: *giggles, smiles coyly* "That's very cute...if a bit corny..." *plays with hair*

*twenty minutes of flirting and chatting*

Girl: "Say, you're really sweet. Could you buy me a no strings attached plane ticket to Krakow? Maybe even America?" *looks really cute*
Guy: "Um...you are kidding, right?" ]

In the US, it does happen in "everyday casual interactions between a man and a woman" - you have no idea how desperate a huge portion of US guys is.

I doubt very much that a man would buy a plane ticket for a women with no strings attached. That is the point of my (and Dsea's, I think) argument. As I said in an earlier post, I believe someone might get a bus ticket for somebody (hell, I've done it a couple of times, and I've had no ulterior motives). A plane ticket is vastly different. It is worth too much. Therefore buying a plane ticket for someone would either be in the context of a) you are close in some way b) you are envisioning to get something out of the deal. So I think here I am reacting to the idea that one could get a plane ticket simply by being female. Someone might pay a $5 bus fare out of charity, but I doubt that most men would drop $600 on a woman he met on the street ("hey, sir, may I have a plane ticket to x?"). You would have to 'offer' something with such a deal. So if the argument here is yes, a female could gain a plane ticket by essentially prostituting herself, then I have no quibble with the logic of that. But if the argument is that a female could gain a plane ticket simply for the virtue of being female, offering nothing to the guy, being able to walk up to a man on the street and ask him for a $600 ticket somewhere...that to me is essentially flawed. I'm sure there have been cases where it has happened, but it is not an every-day occurence.

Some characteristics of the English:

If someone steps on your foot, you apologise first. Then you end up in a mutual round of 'I'm sorry!' which will go on for a good few seconds.

If you are having difficulty engaging with an English person, talk about the weather. "Funny weather, eh?" - You will be amazed at the kind of conversations this will lead on to.

Do NOT mix up Welsh, English, Irish, and Scottish. This is because Welsh, Irish and Scottish generally have their own 'identities', and hate being lumped in with the evil English. Of course, most of this is just rhetoric, as the majority of English people have some kind of Irish/Welsh/Scottish blood...

Expect a very self-deprecating sense of humour.

Expect 'those of the continent' (i.e. other Europeans) to be viewed with faint suspicion and then (hopefully) warmth, and Americans to be somewhat viewed as the errant child of the family that gets into trouble at school and starts fights with other people.

There are places other than London.

Offer someone a cup of tea if they visit you.

Queue. For the love of all that is holy, queue.

Ever read Bill Bryson's travel books? I've read these - Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe and I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away. Really interesting read and quite funny too, especially for people like me who are too broke to travel. :D

I love Bill Bryson. Very funny travel guides (and spot on, most of the time).

Travelling is indeed stupidly expensive. Do you have any plans to travel, though? Where would you go if you could travel?

I made the experience that most american people I talked with, think that other countries think bad of them. Very funny, most told me that they are ashamed how american people behave when traveling to other countries.

My experience:
In vacations, I always knew which people came from Russia or other east european countries ( very noisy), but I rarely knew which people were from the USA unless I talked with them. Actually, they all were very friendly, and I even got invited into a room for a party by some, so I only made good experiences till now. ( the party was great, since it were four girls (sisters and cousin) ... dawn, that was a big missed chance =( )

Any other experiences?
Well, in general I have a very picture of the USA, however, one topic always ends up in a mess. When I talk with black american people, the topic of racism really pops up a lot. Some don't care, like me, but others really seem to have no other topic to talk about. As if they are on a war against everyone who isn't black.... I wonder, is racism really still such a big topic in the USA?

Yeah, but its not often used directly. Many people hate obama cause
He is Black, but they use other terms to hate him. Most of them are red staters who loves bush hate Blacks in general. Having said that, the world is
Full of racists of all colors.

Oh my, oh my. I didn't knew that...
However, at least he seems more popular than Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

Obama is popular with many here, white or black.

McCain is a hothead and Hillary
Is a Clinton and a woman plus she has too much baggage like McCain.. Its too soon for the US to have a woman president in some peoples minds. I don't care as long as she is competant.

Teleprompter in chief.

You know for someone who went to Harvard, he is terrible at being extemporaneous. Of course Bush was the worst messing up names left and right. As for great speakers, Bill Clinton was the king. Although, I don't vote for Democrat, we need more in D.C. with his wisdom and charm and less of his promiscuity.

I am stil trying to understand how a simpleton like
Bush got elected twice. Its no wonder this country is a mess when it puts,a drunken white knuckler like this 2 digit IQ idiot was, in charge. At least Obama can speak English.

This is true. I do my best to vote on the person who represents the values I would like to have as a leader. For this reason I did not vote in both past presidential elections with Bush. I could not see Al Gore living up to the highest standard we expect of a leader, nor could I see that in Kerry. It is frustrating that at times we vote for the lesser of two evils.

What I admired in Bush was his directness, if anything. As they say, you cannot have a philosopher king. He wasn't the brightest person to graduate from Yale. I just looked at his transcripts and saw mostly 70s and low 80s.

What I am trying to say is that I detest D.C. lawyerese doublespeak. Kerry was the worst for that.

oncebitten55 is a flaming-ass liberal. As such, he sincerely believes that anyone who dislikes Obama must be a racist, and anyone who dislikes Hillary must be a misogynist.

By liberals' definition, any opinion contrary to a leftist one is "hateful". This is the only way they know how to argue.

Please take his opinions with a grain of salt (i.e. with skepticism).
