in a system of election, only those who desire power the most get into office. handing down the throne through family at least gives a reasonable chance that the heir will be a decent person.

This is true, more than ever now.

The great William F. Buckley Jr. once said, "I'd rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 400 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than to the faculty of Harvard University."

I understand what your saying and I'm not entirely comfortable with that either, but I feel better about it than I do about current democracy. Not everything is perfect.

At the moment, the Queen is useless. She has no real power and our taxes go to pay for her family for no real reason. Which is why I voted for her at the last election; to try to give her back her power.

Your issue about Obama just goes to prove a point I heard a while back (can't provide any links, I forgotten where I heard it) that the People don't know what is good for them and for most it is only a popularity contest. I also read THIS the other day which mentions that many people flock to a party or candidate as if they were a sports team and will cheer them on. This is the only reason Arnold Schwarzenegger ever became governor. If it wasn't for his previous acting career, he wouldn't have stood a chance. I also have a suspicion that Obama only got into office to be 'America's First Black President'. When a democracy is run by trivial things like this, it really doesn't matter who runs the country. I'd much rather get rid of the whole thing altogether, freeing up a monarch to run it in peace.
