Every time I don my hipster disguise and go to a coffee shop, I just overhear weird things. No deep insight into the dating world today, no minute yet meaningful interpersonal interactions, nada.

There's a lady across from me right now having a very loud, emotional, and personal conversation on her phone and I feel awkward. A few weeks ago there was a lesbian couple in here talking far too loudly about their sex life and politics. The same guy I've always noticed but never spoken to is here, too, studying away and seemingly oblivious to everything.

How do you do it? These are unsettling places.

I mostly hear english students attempting to have deep conversations and failing horribly, but not realising. and girls validating each others hypergamy. strengthening the hold of the disease, if you will. telling each other how great they are, how they discard men and mock the gender. perhaps they need each others reassurance because some intact part of their humanity is disgusted with what they do.

I am in an 'indie coffee shop' now and I JUST shaved off my muttonchops and I am still surrounded by dull, arrogant conversatiosn. People who are better looking than me, more "confident" (cough) arrogant than me, seem to have all the answers to ALL the problems in the world, are having more dates, more sex, more fun.

I am invisble to most people, unless they "need" something from me.

Why would you be jealous of me?

This I could at least snicker at, but I think they all go to the Starbuck's. It's freezing in there so I don't usually go. We also have a lot of parents with kids, and some retired doctor who always tries to give people gum.

A few years ago I was in a location I don't usually visit reading a geology textbook I'd borrowed from a friend, and that sparked a conversation with someone nearby about the petrified wood he collected on a trip once. He gave me a couple extra pieces to add to my collection of relevant junk at home, very nice of him. I can now make jokes about receiving wood from strangers.

Two of my old teachers seem meet here every Wednesday evening, presumably for business.

I love coffeehouses. I still want to play board games in one.

I am a non-person when it comes to women. People and women in general "forget" I am there. being shy and single my whole life, I am a good listener, and observer.

Boy do I understand that.

I used to think the world, and everyone and everything in it was beautiful, I figured most people were good, and did good things. Therefore I figured the best way to be a better person (more successful person) would be to observe other people. I started using my own invisibleness to do just that, observe people and gain insight. I always assumed that others had just figured out somthing that I hadn't. For a while a tried desperately to be like my peers, to act like they do, to figure out what they know and I don't. But then, after a while, as my own morals caught up with my observations in a sudden rush of revulsion and discust. I never went back to loking towards most other people for the way to be.

I used to love going into this one coffeehouse. I could always strike up a conversation.

The coffeehouse where I am now sucks. It's too mainstream. Giggly teenage girls and stupid conversation.

I used to think everyone else got a guidebook on how to live life, and I missed out. So I observed others, and tried to mimic their behaviour. This was back when I thought humans were good. But I now know how dishonest most human beings actually are.

I often feel like I'm invisible, just a passive observer of the world.

Me too Adam.... at times I just watch people and I wonder to myself "how do they just turn it on?" and "How come if this or that guy says something, ANYTHING......all the women giggle, preen and flirt with him and if I said the exact same thing, my audience would be crickets and tumbleweeds. The occasional snotty look of 'how dare you try to be funny in my presence' type of thing"
