For a serious exercise, that is a hard one to put a solid definition on because exercise programs and plans come in all shapes, sizes, methods, etc... If you're in a serious exercise program, you'll know it. It doesn't mean simply being serious about following your exercise program.

A good rule of thumb for gauging "serious" exercise plans from casual ones would look something like this:

If an exercise program encompasses more than 1 hour/day for 5 days/week, has a focused objective (such as preparing for athletic competitions), and is intense enough that your body or muscle groups NEED protein or electrolyte supplements beyond your diet's capacity to provide them, then it's a serious program.

My exercise program is definitely NOT a serious one, as it consists of mostly cardio training (treadmills, eliptical trainers, etc...) with a little bit of abdominal exercises. Also, I work out about 5 days/week and though it generally takes me just over an hour, I'm not focused on preparing for anything and my goals are to reduce body fat and maintain high cardiovascular capability.

As for sources, I have a number of friends who take or have taken in the past protein supplements and they (and their closest friends and family) personally attest to the side effects they suffer from artificial protein intake. Also, you can find plenty of various sources by googling "protein shake side effects", by reading the fine print on the side of the protein shake mix cans, and by talking to several different nutrition store workers (but take what they say with a grain of salt, they are there to sell products, afterall)

Good natural protein is easy to get. All you have to do to get more protein is eat an extra serving (piece) of grilled chicken fillet or a larger steak with your regular meal. Make sure it's prepared healthy, the ill effects of an extra piece of fried chicken more than offset the extra protein benefit.

Protein shake side effects happen in various degrees to different people. I have been taking high quality whey protein for 6 years and have had ZERO side effects other than gaining muscle mass.

Okay then, but for those of you that know the term - annoyingly besides ethno, given I've already asked! - how is someone with hypotonia supposed to improve his fitness?

Ethnocide,

I have to bike 5 days a week to school (~6 miles round trip), so I'm always doing a lot of aerobic exercise. And I'm pretty skinny, always have been. It's at the point where I think it's one of the reasons I'm not taken seriously by some people. Problem is, every time I've tried to work out, bulk up, etc. I've flopped. I'm willing to take the dive in, though, and be serious about it. What's your rec for people who have to do a lot of aerobic exercise?

I read online somewhere that people who do a lot of aerobic exercise have sags in their bodily ATP levels, i.e. the ATP isn't getting in all the nooks and crannies where it should and this is a cause of fatigue. I'm fairly fatigued. Should I take ATP on top of a protein shake regimen?

You always should consult a doctor first. I wouldn't start taking any supplements right away, they will go to waste. Maybe a multivitamin actually. I suggest slowly increasing your calorie, carb, fat, protein intake. Lifting weights should start to cause you to crave these things naturally. You wanna load up on calories and carbs if you bike a lot. Ultimately the heavy biking WILL limit your muscle bulking progress, but you should be able to offset this to a degree. Drink some weight gaining milk, eat lotsa of protein.

Ultimately it's gunna come down to food and heavy lifting. Try slowly increasing your food, start lifting, see where it goes. In a couple months, take a look at yourself, check your progress and work from there. Everyone's body is different, we need to see what yours does. Most likely after a couple months is when you will start taking ATP and creatine.

I've never been with a muscular guy before. Out of the guys I've dated they were either thin of fat. In my opinion the idea that girls care about muscles is kinda a myth. But working out is always good for you so it could never hurt to try. If anything it will improve your heath a lot. So there is no way you can really loose if you decide to start working out.

I find a range of body types attractive. But having strong arms and legs but a big fat belly is always hot to me. I guess it's kind of a strange taste, but it's what I like. Also being tall is hot too. I tend to go after guys who are 6' + and 200lbs+. Also guys who are proportioned short even tho they are very tall (shorter legs and larger upper body) is hot to me. (and red hair for some reason).

But I've dated, liked, and been very attracted to guys who were shorter and smaller than I am. So in the end it's all about compatibility for most women. Well for me at least. I don't want to speak for most women.

Is this the kind of body that you and Newhope have been talking about, the kind that will get a guy hot one night stands with ease?

Or bulkier like this?

It is now my goal to gain 20 pounds of muscle mass, at least. There's no fucking excuse as to why I can't - I know enough about exercise and balancing all the muscle groups, rest, how much stress to put on the muscles, etc. I made the decision a week back to buy protein shake from the store. I now drink it daily, and it's great. I feel much more energetic than I did in the past, and my muscles are probably thanking me for it.

For now, aside from my biking I'm dead lifting my ottoman every other day. Not much weight, but 20-30 reps still seems to work out my biceps. Also, the fact that it's bulky puts strain on other muscles to balance it - a great side effect "free weights" type devices like it.

I've altered my diet a bit too. I cook frozen vegetables and eat them by the bowl, and eat bananas and other stuff that's absorbed for a good carb baseline to give me energy over the day. I'm of the belief that vitamins are equally as important as amino acids and such for bulking up. How can your body do its thing without the right cofactors and enzymes? It can't.

I'll probably try ATP and creatine in the future to see if it will help. That's only when I start to get beyond this initial stage of muscle development, though. For now I'm ramping things slowly so it can be a consistent regimen that is sustainable. Which is in my opinion the most important thing when it comes to an exercise regimen.

Just a word to the wise, don't try running outside if it's freezing out, unless you enjoy pneumonia. Take it *cough* from me. *wheeze*

Also, if it hasn't been said already (and I know this is common sense), make sure to stretch before you work out! Do a search to find out how to stretch the parts you're working out.
