Dr Pepper Ten 'not for women'

By Mae Anderson, Associated Press

New York – Dudes don't drink diet.

Or at least that's the idea behind Dr Pepper Ten, a 10-calorie soft drink Dr Pepper Snapple Group is rolling out on Monday with a macho ad campaign that proclaims "It's not for women." The soft drink was developed after the company's research found that men shy away from diet drinks that aren't perceived as "manly" enough.

To appeal to men, Dr Pepper made its Ten drink 180 degrees different than Diet Dr Pepper. It has calories and sugar unlike its diet counterpart. Instead of the dainty tan bubbles on the diet can, Ten will be wrapped in gunmetal grey packaging with silver bullets. And while Diet Dr Pepper's marketing is women-friendly, the ad campaign for Ten goes out of its way to eschew women.

For instance, there's a Dr Pepper Ten Facebook page for men only. And TV commercials are heavy on the machismo, including one spot that shows muscular men in the jungle battling snakes and bad guys and appear to shoot lasers at each other.

"Hey ladies. Enjoying the film? Of course not. Because this is our movie and this is our soda," a man says as he attempts to pour the soda into a glass during a bumpy ATV ride. "You can keep the romantic comedies and lady drinks. We're good."

OB-55: I think I just found a new soft drink to enjoy!!! Oh yeah, its made with real manly _SUGAR_, not corn fructose, like most soft drinks are!!!

Havent tried it yet, myself but I will. I prefer regular Coke, or the new Pepsi made with sugar, when I buy sodas, but I like
this trend.

Yeah, I know it's advertizement, so we shall see how long this will last in the femisphere, but its a start.

Damn tired of all the Kotex and other feminine product ads. I swear, I can puke sometimes. Another good reason
not to watch TV very much.

The ironic thing is, sugar is a heck of a lot healthier than aspartame

Don't know whether you have it over there, but here we have a chocolate bar called 'Yorkie' and their ad slogan is 'not for girls' because it is too big and chunky. I remember one ad which had a girl pretending to be a man and acting all manly to try to get a bar. The shop owner eventually realises that she is a girl when he comments on how beautiful her eyes are and she responds in a really girly way. He refuses her service and she stomps off in a huff while he eats the chocolate. I'm surprised there wasn't more of an uproar about it. When she was about eight, my sister saw the slogan and cried because she thought she wasn't allowed it

Yes, we have Yorkie Bars, but they are pricey here. I am not into candy, per se, but I do use Milky Way bars on days when I need fast energy, and no time to stop driving.

I agree with you about about sugar being better for human consumption then the other sweeteners, overall.

Aspartame makes me feel wired, and there is lots of evidence that fructose corn syrup is worse then sugar for many people and contributes to all the obese people that live here.

Corn is highly subsidized by our government, and is mandated for use in gasoline as an air-pollution control additive in gasoline, thanks to the agribusiness lobbyists, as well as replacing sugar in many foods and drinks, replacing sucrose.

Funny that about your sister, but children always seem to want something they cant have, don't you think?

adverts like these dont bother feminists because they're condescending to men and portray them 1 dimensionally.

There is actually quite a bit of male-centric advertising, although the majority of it occurs during sporting events on television. I saw this commercial the other day and I actually laughed, and I don’t even eat fast food.

This. It's just the same sort of pandering as those 'strong enough for a man but made for a woman's ads.

Also, it makes a lot more sense to target men who want to avoid feminine associations for diet drinks. Girls and guys who don't care about a butch image are already a pretty tapped out market, diet soda wise.

Oh come on! 'Diet' soda drinks? Just as lame as those electronic cigs.
If you want to stop, stop it altogether.
I don't drink any soda anymore. And no, my head didn't explode because of this. OTOH, I am not American, so I have no cultural inclination to do so. :?

Somewhat similar commercial I find hilarious. Wish slimjims weren't so gross or I'd buy one simply because this new line of "be a man" commercials are great.
