100 years ago tonight, the Titanic hit the iceberg.

Anyone know for sure (without taking a wild guess) what 11:40 ship's time would be? Is it GMT?

Bothers me too Aku......

I am one of the five people in the USA who has never seen the movie, and I still cannot stand that Celine Dion song / hit from the movie.

Silly side note.....I watched a PBS documentary about the Titanic years ago, and one of my roommates at the time (a woman) said during the documentary "I thought that song from the movie was an actual hit song from that time. Didn't they have color film back then? Why is this only black and white?"

All three of my other roommates (all men) just starred at her in disbelief. This same women considered herself smart.

they teach a lot of history about racism in the USA, but what they really should be teaching is LABOR HISTORY in the USA. There is more workplace animosity between workers and bosses, and violence in the American workplace than black-lynchings in the American south post-civil war.

Remember Pinkerton? Any of you ever been to West Virginia? The "rust belt" of the midwest? The desolate and empty factories in the northeast (where I am a native of)? The State governments calling in the National Guard to break up strikers all through the 1950's? The family farm bust of the 1950's????

How about an educated guess?
Time zones were not as standard back then as now, especially not at sea. The Titanic was around 50 degrees west longitude when it sank, which is about 3 hours 20 minutes behind Greenwich going only by position of the sun (it moves 15 degrees westward in an hour.) Assuming ship's time corresponded to local solar time (I don't know this for sure), that would make it around 3 a.m. in London when it hit the iceberg and around 5:40 when it sank, or approximately 10 p.m. and 12:40 a.m, respectively, in New York, which is just under 75 degrees (5 hours) west of London.

Judges...?
Close enough! Give him the big screen TV!
Quote:
At the time of the collision, Titanic's clocks were set to 2 hours 2 minutes ahead of Eastern Time Zone (UTC−05:00) and 2 hours 58 minutes behind Greenwich Mean Time.[1] In other words, her time was close to UTC-3 (only 2 minutes ahead).

So that means that we've got a couple more hours. So, considering daylight savings, it's going to happen tonight at 10:38 Easter, 7:38 Pacific.
Did I get that right?

Explains a lot about why nice guys finish last these days, doesn't it...
You guys may think I'm crazy, but I say that this is symptomatic of the problems that have made so many of us permavirgins.

Anyway, I digress...

A friend of mine was teaching middle school math (in the United States) when the 9/11 attacks happened. He said that as the whole class was watching it on TV, a girl pipes up and says, "Why do we even care? That's not even in this country!"

As a historian I know well about Titanic and her story. Yeah I saw the movie (though the romance was dull...and I wish Celine Dion warts for that fucking song), and I'm horrified to know that there are folks out there that didn't believe the events in the movie (for the most part) actually occured.

I also feel that they should leave the site alone, it's a graveyard and should be treated as such: visits and honors only, no digging!

Well 9/11 happened, but what exactly happened?

This is one of the best documentaries on the truth of 9/11.

My ancestors were sea faring people, this kind of shit really pisses me of, it one thing for divers to look for a wreck and dive on it to ascertain why it sank and give closure to the families, but when these fuckers do it for profit, I pray the gods strike down upon them for desecrating the graves of those who have lost their lives at sea.
