With all the pile of FPS games I have bought over the last 20 years of the genre's existence, DOOM is still my favourite.

Bought Borderlands GoTY for $8.00 on Steam. Best money I've spent on a game in many years. I'm tired of paying top dollar for these AAA games with equally priced DLC, and I feel as though I am putting only 1/4 the value back into the game. It just depresses the hell out of me.

What I want to play is a contradiction, a game that cannot exist or is based on nostalgia. I absolutely HATED Final Fantasy I when it was released on the NES back in the dark ages, but I find myself putting 1,000s of hours into it now. Maybe it is just a fluke, but there is no way for me to determine what I will like anymore. It's sad that I measure my life with games, books, and movies rather than relationships. But, in some twisted way, at least I can go back and "have fun" with an old game unlike an ex-girlfriend lol.

At least my girlfriends never age, always have the same ending, I can stop playing mid-orgasm, and the best part is that there are no kids, no in-laws, and other stuff.

Still, one has to wonder at the state of current gaming. Using the relationship pattern, I'd say games are at a "5 minute" pleasure rather than the "30 minute" pleasure they used to be. Games like women these days are just for a quickie, and like women, you need to purchase a fucking DLC to keep them interesting. Sex fucking rules every part of our market. Or perhaps I'm just looking for confirmation of my theory with a skewed set of parameters. I just cannot help drawing comparisons, it is how I live my life.

I play BF2 = awesome
I play BF3 = piece of shit trying too hard to steal CoD fans over to EA's side.

Games marketed in the past were geared to gamers, but not with the instant gratification, the constant "prizes" and other gimmicky bullshit of today. It seems you cannot enjoy anything except in hindsight. WTF is wrong with me? That is why gaming make me a "whiner" and not a winner. I whine about hacking, duping, botting, exploits, glitching, griefing, ninjas, and other bullshit while the game is popular. And then years down the road, I'll buy the next game and be like "this fucking sucks" and cue everything I liked about previous games with the bullshit.

I make this case for Diablo 3, but damn it is so hard to be optimistic about the future of that game. I want to bash the game over Jay Wilson's head and tell him to go back to whatever the fuck he did before he became Game Director aka Aren't you Thankful? and D2 was not fun, I determine what is fun.

Amen to all of this. My life has become a parade of 'when is this movie or album or game coming out?' too. Most people look forward to dates. I look forward to media.

But you're right. It's just as bad with media. They are so fleeting, and designed as products first, quality games distinctly second. They have no longevity anymore. People are still modding DOOM 20 years later. Will anyone be modding or playing BF3 in twenty years?

I like gaming, but I really dislike gamers today. They are mostly a bunch of whiny, spoiled ingrates. Imagine having the kind of games that are commonplace today, when we were kids? I would have dreamed for that kind of stuff. We used to be happy with 16 bit graphics.

I hate the DLC business model, personally. All this locked content they only release after the game has shipped. 'Preorder exclusives'. I hate all that bollocks. I bought RAGE recently, and there is disc-locked DLC which only people who buy it new will get a download code for. The game is pretty good, the engine has issues, but it is a lot more linear and corridoor like than DOOM. It's a shame that id software made a more linear game in 2011 than they did in 1993.

Borderlands is pretty good, though I do find it a bit repetitive.

I like Borderlands too. Good game to play with a friend. :)

So I see that Battlefield 4 has been announced, lol. For 2013!

I guess I should unwrap and actually install Battlfield 3... *cough* Though Planetside 2 is shaping up to be a corker.

Xanatos, good points. :) Check out this interesting article. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/06/05/e3s-press-events-do-not-represent-the-gaming-i-know/

I do like FPS, but yes, the market is flooded with games where you simply shoot guns at other guys with guns. The genre needs a big shake up. Borderlands was successful at introducing some RPG elements to the genre. Far Cry 3 looks interesting as well. I enjoyed Far Cry 2.

I still like arcadey FPS that channel the old Raven, id and 3DRealms games. Like Serious Sam, Painkiller, Dreamkiller and UT.

Caught this on a stream. Sounds like the kind of thing TM might enjoy.

Start of a whiny playthrough. Might watch one or two.

That feeling when you solve a problem in your video game not only faster than the official tech support, but when their analysis of your problem wasn't an area you even spent time tinkering with.

I find RAGE ripetitive and somewhat unoriginal. Tunnels and underground got boring after some time.
Agree with you on DLC!

Just got the Doom 3 BFG Edition for my PS3.

It's been a long while since i've played any version of Doom.

Still a fantastic game.

I had never played Doom 3 before, so I'm really getting into that now. I have actually put more time into Doom 1 and 2, on this new release, though. Still amazing shooters.
