I know it's kind of trendy to bash 'mainstream' nu metal type acts. I used to be into Limp Bizkit and Korn and LP in high school, until I discovered more heavy bands. I then went into Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Opeth, etc. I kind of stopped following Linkin after their second album Meteora (which I loved).

I actually decided I don't mind them, though. They are quite talented at what they do, and are probably better at their style of music than their peers are (Bizkit, etc). Their songs have lots of hooks.

Do yourself a favor and get "One Thousand Suns". It got mixed reviews due to being a concept album and a departure from some of their earlier stuff, but IMHO it is their best album ever. Here's a sample:

Linkin park are fantastic. I honestly can't see what so many people have against them. Even the fans who only like their older stuff. I actually like them because they're not afraid to do different things. Every album is different. Their newest one has kind of a dance feel to it; a genre I'm not particularly fond of, but they've managed to make it very good.

Their first album is epic, really.

Their latest song/video is epic as well...

For such a popular mainstream band, they never cease to amaze me with their political savvy and lyrical courage.

Quote:
You told me yes
You held me high
And I believed when you told that lie
I played soldier, you played king
And struck me down, when I kissed that ring
You lost that right, to hold that crown
I built you up, but you let me down
So when you fall, I'll take my turn
And fan the flames
As your blazes burn

F***in SPOT ON! :coolbeans:

Don't like them at all, they sound way to polished/poppy for a rock/metal-band.

That's what I hate metalheads. Why metal couldn't sound... good? you know...

This is the thing, I don't think you can give them a genre, at times they sound metal, at times, they're rap, at times they're dance. Sometimes in the same song. I try not to judge a band on what they genre many refer to them as, but rather what they are. Saying they're too [insert adjective here] for a [insert genre here], says they obviously don't belong to that genre so why are you even comparing?

Everyone calls Green Day a punk band. They're not. I don't care what anyone says, they are quite emphatically NOT punk. As a punk band, they're crap. But taken as what they are, without the limitations of a genre, they are very good.

Agreed on Green Day. If you take them as punk, they're crap. But if you do away with genres, they're actually probably one of the best at the style they do.

Same with Linkin, really. Of course, if you compare them to other metal bands, they sound too poppy, produced, etc. But taken on their own merits, outside of genre, they're one of the best at what they do.

I like metal, but I'm not a big fan of metalheads (or purist punks, for that matter). 'It doesn't sound mean enough, brutal enough, raw and produced in some guy's garage enough'. There's no reason why metal music can't have slick production.

If you take LP as a mix of metal, rock, rap, and electronic music, they are pretty good at what they do.

I grew up in the 80's... I love that polished sound.

As long as the lyrics are real and the song has meaning, the more produced the better IMHO.

Case in point, Pink Floyd. A more recent example, besides Linkin and Green Day... Enter Shikari -- they are as raw and powerful as it gets, yet also very well produced.

Er, Green Day is a punk band. Punk-pop maybe but still punk. I mean are you going to tell me that the Ramones aren't punk, when they are one of the top three defining bands of the genre (along with the Sex Pistols and the Clash?). The Ramones are by far the band that has had the biggest influence on Green Day. Yes, they have their own specific way of playing and a distinct sound, and in their later albums expanded their style a bit. What got them famous though was three chord energetic pop punk, the kind of thing that the Ramones basically invented. You seem to have your own definition as to what true "punk" is. Perhaps if you were thinking of hardcore or Oi! as your model of punk than Green Day is not really qualified, but in cultural terms where the genre is a broad umbrella with many sub genre's (many of which blend together), Green Day is well within it's scope. That's not a matter of opinion.

Before American Idiot, they had a kind of Punk sound, but certainly not anymore. As somebody once said to me, Punk was more of a statement than a music style, after getting fed up with the long drawn out prog rock. Green day's new stuff is very progressive and kinda nullifies one of the things Punk was based on. Though I suppose you could draw political parallels to Anarchy in the UK and American Idiot. To be honest, I haven't heard much of The Ramones ( ), but Green Day sound nothing like the Sex Pistols or the Clash.

Yeah, that's just it. Green Day's later stuff is very progressive, rock opera, 'Tommy' type stuff. Quite the antithesis of what punk was originally about. Returning rock to its short, two minute, raucous origins. Certainly, their early output was largely inside the punk bracket.
